The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu has been building a practice of using its collections in more creative ways to offer increased, deeper and more personal levels of engagement. Several successful projects have shared a number of common benefits. They have prompted fresh research and made new partnerships, trialled different approaches in interpretation and supported learning within a creative context. The popularity of crafting has grown considerably in the UK in recent years and its contribution to well-being has long been recognised. Museums are responding by providing opportunities for alternative ways to connect with collections and simultaneously increasing their relevance to more people. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds can interact with objects to generate their own meanings through poetry, art and craft, linking their personal experience to the stories offered by more traditional interpretation.
