The copyright laws of nearly every country grant legal protection for publications, archival collections, historical artifacts, and may other works in our museums, libraries, and archives. That same law also sets limits on those legal rights and carves out exceptions specifically allowing these cultural institutions to digitize, copy, and share many works in support of research and preservation. Dr. Crews has for many years been the leading consultant to an agency of the United Nations on these issues and the development of relevant law around the world. This session will explore the rights of owners, but highlight the trends allowing museums and libraries to pursue their cultural mission while minimizing legal risks. We will also explore new developments affecting legal liabilities and how to make informed decisions.
