This session will examine the history of automotive mascots and explain their difference from hood ornaments. The objects are popular with audiences and collectors alike, but a thorough understanding is needed before a museum starts collecting and exhibiting them. The Revs Institute’s own Tom Roemer will show examples, providing a general background of their history, including major manufacturers, themes, and materials. Mascots can be a highly effective way to engage audiences. Attendees will learn how a museum builds a collection, know where to find them, identify expensive originals and cheap reproductions, and how should they be exhibited physically and virtually.
