Automotive Mascots and Hood Ornaments in the Museum

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This session will examine the history of automotive mascots and hood ornaments (and explain the difference). The objects are popular with audiences and collectors alike, but a thorough understanding is needed before a museum starts collecting and exhibiting them. Revs Institute’s own Mister Mascot will show examples, providing a general background of their history, including major manufacturers, themes, and materials. Mascots can be a highly effective way to engage audiences, but their increasing financial value means museums face growing costs to obtain them. Attendees will learn how a museum builds a collection, know where to find them, identify expensive originals and cheap reproductions, and how should they be exhibited physically and virtually.
